BEST WINES FOR SUMMER GRILLING
Summer evenings are perfect for gathering friends and family and drinking wine.
Pair wine with the food you will serve. This information is for those who are unfamiliar with food pairing.
There are many Varietals out there to choose from. Selecting the perfect wine will improve your menu choices and entertaining will be more enjoyable.
The following are several factors to consider before you buy your wine.
White Varietals: Chardonnay is perfect for fish, chicken with cream, and corn on the cob.
Riesling tastes wonderful with brats, shrimp, chicken, and vegetables.
Sauvignon Blanc has an herbal taste to it, and goes well with sauces and marinades. If you want to enjoy Sauvignon Blanc, have grilled chicken with Italian dressing or an orange marinade for dinner.
Vegetables and fresh herbs, or fish with dill and lemon or anything else marinated in light citrus will go pretty well with Sauvignon Blanc.
Red Varietals to Consider: Zinfandels go well with many red meats.
Zinfandel is an excellent choice when serving smoked meats, due to its bold flavor. Zinfandels go well with barbecue and steak sauce along with salsa. Make sure you keep an eye on your spices. If the sauce is too spicy, it will not go well with the wine.
Merlot complements foods with spicy sauce. Merlot is fruity, and blends well with spices without distinguishing good flavor.
Shiraz/Syrah is yet another wine on this particular list. This wine is tasty with almost any red meat. This wine has bold fruit flavors but a mild tannin in the background. Here is the perfect wine to serve at a barbeque.
Cabernet Sauvignon is perfect for fattier meats like steaks and burgers. Lighter tannins are subdued by meat fat, which tastes wonderful. Wine is best with bold cheese like a sharp cheddar or blue cheese.
Pinot Noir is best known as an extremely food friendly wine. This selection is suited to grilled fish, hamburgers or chicken. Pinot Noir is good for most dinners.
Temecula Valley has thirty wineries with award winners. You can usually find their wine at your neighborhood store, or you can buy it from the winery itself.
